Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a persistent and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, located at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and seep beneath the foundation of the house. This unwanted intrusion caused damage to the flooring, contributed to rising damp, and facilitated mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Do You Determine the Cause of Water Ingress?
The issue originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the rear and side yards of neighbouring properties. Without an effective drainage system to intercept this incoming water, it was forced to flow beneath the house.
Developing an Effective Drainage Solution
CS Plumbing designed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system specifically engineered to capture and redirect water before it could reach the foundation of the home.
The project encompassed several critical components:
- A French drain system meticulously crafted to gather surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes in the curb to ensure effective discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes, replacing the original smaller pipes, connected to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
- A robust retaining wall system constructed along the boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to create a strong barrier to hold back the adjacent yard.
- Efficient soil removal on-site, facilitated by a dumper for streamlined site management.
What Measures Can You Implement for Effective Water Management?
The newly installed drainage system now efficiently captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
